La storia � qui narrata di un giovane provinciale di pi� di duemila anni fa, Catullo di Verona, in cerca di fortuna nella grande Roma; una storia in larga misura d’amore, che ci stupisce ancor oggi per la sua tormentata freschezza e la sua attualit�. Questo Romanzo di Catullo, pubblicato ora per la prima volta, contiene circa una met� dei componimenti del poeta veronese, distribuiti in una sequenza che si propone di ricostruire una �“vita di Catullo” o meglio una “presentazione di Catullo”, poich� il poeta � presentato al lettore insieme con la sua poesia, cio� insieme a quello che pi� ci interessa di lui�. � una scelta, questa, che rende estremamente godibile la lettura del testo: un racconto che mette al centro Catullo, con la sua giovanile esuberanza e con le sue non dissimulate emozioni, ma agganciando il discorso alle poesie, sia nell’originale sia nell’efficace traduzione di De Benedetti. Catullo � in effetti, tra i poeti latini, quello che gode anche oggi di popolarit� presso gli studenti liceali, verosimilmente consonanti con uno dei carmi pi� famosi, il V, col suo invito a Lesbia a non curarsi del �brontolar dei vecchi / Troppo severi� e ad abbandonarsi all’amore (�Or mille baci / Dammi e poi cento e poi ancora mille …�). Disegnatore alla C.G.E. di Milano, nel 1930 � licenziato per non aver voluto prendere la tessera del partito. Impiegatosi alla Treccani, con le leggi razziali viene incaricato da Aldo Garzanti di progettare e dirigere, di nascosto perch� ebreo, le ‘Garzantine’. Sul Corriere spiega l’atomica nell’agosto del ’45. Collabora al Corriere fino al ’53 e poi alla Stampa fino al ’96.
