The science of mechanics Supplement to the Third English Edition containing the author's additions to the Seventh German Edition 1915

The Science of Mechanics: A Critical and Historical Account of Its Development by Ernst Mach, originally published in the early 20th century, offers an in-depth analysis of the evolution of mechanics as a field of study. This edition, based on the seventh German edition, provides critical additions and insights not found in previous versions. Translated by Philip E.B. Jourdain, this supplementary volume includes new research on Galileo and his precursors, along with an exploration of the work of ancient scientists such as Archimedes. Mach's revolutionary ideas continue to challenge and influence modern scientific thought. With its detailed examination of the development of core principles like inertia, dynamics, and the conservation of energy, this work remains a foundational text in both the history and philosophy of science.

Key discussions include the early achievements of Galileo, Benedetti, and Newton, their contributions to dynamics, and the ongoing relevance of their work in contemporary physics. Mach critically evaluates the conceptual development of classical mechanics and offers philosophical insights that question the validity of absolute space and time. For students, scholars, and enthusiasts of the history of science, this restored edition offers a rare and valuable glimpse into the formative debates that shaped our understanding of physics.
