Bernari esordisce nel 1934 col romanzo Tre operai considerato come l'inizio del neorealismo. Nel 1940 pubblica un secondo romanzo, Quasi un secolo, una saga che racconta tre generazioni di una famiglia e che da molti critici � stato considerato il modello di Cent’anni di solitudine di Gabriel Garc�a Marquez. Molti decenni prima anche di Andrea Camilleri, Carlo Bernari raggiunge nella sua opera narrativa una fusione ottimale tra lingua italiana e dialetto, nel suo caso il napoletano, e va considerato come uno dei maggiori narratori non solo della classe operaia italiana, della questione meridionale, del suo tempo, ma � anche un grande cantore della citt� di Napoli. Quasi un secolo � un romanzo di grande impegno nel quale sono rappresentate tre fasi importanti della vita italiana, dalla seonda met� dell'800 al 1925. E precisamente l'evoluzione della borghesia, la crisi dell'intellet-tualismo borghese, e l'evoluzione del movimento operaio coi lavoratori che conquistano fasce di benessere perdendo l'oggetto delle loro originarie rivendicazioni e ideali. I nessi che legano i molteplici ambienti, le diverse vicende, le varie epoche del romanzo in una narrazione unitaria, sono svolti in virt� di uno stile che nn cerca l'effetto esteriore, bens� vuole pervenire alla perfetta aderenza della parola alla sostanza umana dei fatti. Grazie a questa visione del mondo Bernari porta avanti il racconto con rapidi passaggi da ambiente ad ambiente, da personaggio a personaggio, senza abbandoni, senza soste. Un'opera colossale che attraversa il tempo come una freccia ricucendo brani e vicende della nostra storia.
