N?; includes 3 pages of recommendations, a preface, and an introduction to English grammar, followed by the lexicon in double column; extremities rubbed, title page shaved close at bottom margin (as issued - no loss); a good, sound copy or better in full original sheep. Early ownership signature: "Horace Wolcott's dictionary bought Janry. 20th 1805 price 2/6." Johnson (1757-1836) was the first American lexicographer, and his very rare School Dictionary of 1798 was the first dictionary compiled by an American. When a second edition was called for, Johnson collaborated with Elliott and produced this new and larger work. This is the second of two editions printed in 1800, with 32 pages of frontal matter.
