Item description from seller

, Riess, Curt, 1902-1993. The self-betrayed. Glory and doom of the German generals. New York, G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1942, xvi, 402pp., good gray cloth, lightly worn around edges. Map of Europe on endpapers. Riess was a prolific theater and film critic in Berlin in the late 1920s, forced to emigrate in 1933 he reconstructed his career in the US and then in Germany and Switzerland after the war. This book may be informed by his experiences working for the US government during the war. However, the review by H. A. DeWeerd leaves little doubt that Riess had cobbled together the facts quickly and unreliably to make his main point: that the German officer corps could not revolt against Hitler. William O'Shanahan judged that the book presented the American public with what it wanted to hear: "Mr. Riess has chosen to deal with the German generals in the only way they are known to the American public, that is as a caste of noblemen, historic anachronisms projected into the twentieth century from the world of great estates and servile peasants of East Prussia. All the familiar cliches about the Prussian aristocracy have been set forth with great solemnity, apparently with the hope of hypnotizing the reader into acceptance of some very vague and specious historical reasoning.".…
