The letter is addressed to a Sir Cooper Rey, from Portland, 2nd July 1880. Written entirely in manuscript and signed by "Yours very truly, Alfred", this letter references naval affairs - at the time of writing, the Prince was a rear-admiral in the English Royal Navy. The portrait of Alfred, engraved by Daniel John Pound from a photograph by John Jabez Edwin Mayall, was done in 1860, when Alfred was 16. Alfred Ernest Albert (1844-1900) was the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert; his older brother was Edward VII. Prince Alfred was the Duke of Edinburgh until 1866, when he succeeded his uncle Ernest II as the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in the German Empire. He was an admiral in the Royal Navy, eventually ascending to Admiral of the Fleet; memoirist Percy Scott wrote that "as a Commander-in-Chief, the Duke of Edinburgh had, in my humble opinion, no equal. He handled a fleet magnificently.".
