First edition (not stated per publisher's contemporary practice) INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR. x, 194 pages. Hardcover: H 20.75cm x L 14.25cm. Lacks dust jacket. Red cloth lightly rubbed and soiled, some scuffing at bumped spine ends, slight scuffing at board edges particularly at corners. Light toning to edges and endpapers; small red ink bookseller stamp on front free endpaper and rear pastedown; some brown staining to pages 16-21 with interior pages otherwise clean. Binding is firm. A good+ copy with Koltanowski's six-line ink inscription dated for January 10, 1955 on the front free endpaper. With Foreword by editor Milton Finkelstein, additional Foreword by the author, and chess board diagrams throughout. A book of which first editions are uncommon and even more so when signed. Koltanowski was best known for his blindfolded exhibition games and as the syndicated daily chess columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle beginning in May 1948 until his death in February 2000.…
