Signed by musician/composer Joseph Packales on the front endpaper. Also, with an autograph note signed from his widow on a separate sheet of stationery, saying her late husband "used this book extensively." A well-known and productive musician, Packales' list of works includes piano, orchestral, choral, and chamber pieces in addition to an opera. He has twice been nominated for The Pulitzer Prize, and has been honored with The Howard Hanson Prize, several MacDowell Colony fellowships, a major grant from the I.B.M. Corporation, and two grants from The National Endowment for the Arts. Packales served the faculties of Skidmore College, Belknap College, and Cleveland State University and was, from 1984 to 1999, Composer-in-Residence and Associate Professor of Music at The University of Texas at El Paso. He also taught composition and theory courses at The University of Southern Maine Alban Berg [1885-1935] was an Austrian composer of the Second Viennese School. His compositional style combined Romantic lyricism with the twelve-tone technique. Although he left a relatively small oeuvre, he is remembered as one of the most important composers of the 20th century for his expressive style.
