About this Item
London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1904. First Edition. Presentation copy, signed, dated in the year of publication, and inscribed by the author to Beatrice Hall (possibly pseudonymic author S.G. Tallentyre, but with no specific evidence to that effect). Ownership label of Douglas C. Ewing on front pastedown. Octavo, 391 pp. + 4 pp ads. Deep navy cloth with gilt imprinting on cover and spine; frontis illustration; black endpapers; top edge dyed. Very modest spine lean, a few foxing spots on bottom page edges, very light scuffing at bottom of cover. See scans. Sharp copy, better than Very Good, a whisker short of Near Fine. A singular first edition copy of Stanley Weyman's The Abbess of Vlaye. Weyman's signature, dated October 10th in the year of publication, 1904, and inscription to Beatrice Hall are on the dedication page. The much more recent book label of Douglas C. Ewing, author of Pleasing the Spirits: A Catalogue of a Collection of American Indian Art affords this copy its association status. Weyman, after an unsuccessful career as a lawyer, turned to crafting novels both romantic and action-packed. Abbess, a tale set in the south of France in 1589, when Henry IV had achieved most of his aims and Vlaye was the last remaining center of peasant revolt, is both of those. L18n.
