First Edition (first printing). This copy boldly signed by the author at the head of the title page. Tall 8vo. 160pp. Red cloth lettered in gold at the spine. With map-illustrated endpapers, thirteen chapter-header drawings by the author, sixteen photographs, and seven black and white plates reproducing his paintings. A touch of very light wear to the backstrip ends and the off-set outline of a small now-absent sticker to the front free endpaper. A very good copy in price-clipped dust wrapper, nicked and a little torn at the spine panel ends and with a resulting crease to the head of the rear panel, and a little internal discolouration. TOGETHER WITH a proof copy of the first edition, bound in the publisher's unlettered red card wrappers and housed in a somewhat creased, chafed and nicked example of the dust wrapper, which is identical to the final published version bar the following text printed to the head of the rear panel: "Publication date 20th September 1973".
