About this Item

Description:

First edition, first printing. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY. A unique item. Inscribed, in the year of publication, to "Marguerite" to title-page in black ink and bearing the famous actor's signature in full - a nice example. Loosely inserted in the book is a wonderful, original, handwritten letter (still preserved within the mailing envelope, postmarked "July 6th 1978") from Gielgud to a Mrs Dowdeswell. The letter, composed in green ink, captures a lovely sense of both man and actor and mentions his current roles and modern playwrighting. It is written on the actor's pale blue A4-format writing paper (folded), headed with his address, and is signed in full by him. Here is one tiny snippet from it: "I do hope the play didn't bore or shock you. Much as I tried to persuade the clever author to mitigate the language in various scenes I only succeeded in making him agree to certain cuts. it is a great joy to me when people such as yourself have seemed still to show such an interest in my work over so many years." An excellent item. Both book and dust-jacket are preserved in very nice, clean, solid order. Near Fine in Near Fine (protected) dust-jacket. Offered by D B WATERS RARE BOOKS: Professional, full-time booksellers of fine, select 1st editions, established in 1998.
