8vo. Burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. viii, 215pp, (1p). Illustrations. Near fine/very good. Light jacket edgewear only. Superb, tight first edition of the first biography of the Illinois governor and two-time presidential candidate (1900-65) to appear after his sudden death in London on July 14, cranked out so quickly they left off an index! This presentation copy belonged to Stevenson's son and is inscribed and signed by the author in black ballpoint on front flyleaf: "For / Adlai E. Stevenson III / with best wishes / Stuart Gerry Brown / Honolulu / 11/15/65." Laid between pages 57-58, likely just where Adlai III left it, is his place marker -- a 4½" X 4½" slip on which he's pencilled "3rd floor / Room #4". Brown (1912-91) was a long-time Syracuse University professor who authored a number of political biographies and served as a campaign aide for Governor Stevenson during his presidential bids.
