About this Item
'ALAN WALKER TURNS 90!! Happy Birthday, Dear Alan!! Dr. Alan Walker, Life Member and Board of Directors Member of The American Liszt Society, turned 90 on Monday, April 6, 2020. Dr. Walker is considered by most authorities to be the world's preeminent scholar on the life and music of Franz Liszt. Anyone who has read his three-volume biography of our namesake realizes immediately that Alan thoroughly knows his subject and provides the reader with a most interesting "can't-put-it-down" writing style. This is true of his other books, including the most recent Fryderyk Chopin: A Life and Times, which The New York Times called "magisterial." His presentations at festivals of The American Liszt Society likewise hold the listener almost in a trance, with facts, dates, and figures woven together in a story rather than a lecture.' So this Souvenir Programme is from one of those festivals of the American Liszt Society. It took place in Hamilton, Canada, on October 24-27, 1996 and was presented by The City of Hamilton and McMaster University. There is no other souvenir programme of the festival for sale anywhere on the Internet, but if there were this one would still be unique because it is signed by Alan Warner (who was the Festival Director) along with 13 other individuals, some of whom were on his Festival Committee. They include the Festival Coordinator, Brenda Sandberg, and from the Committee, Csaba Baksa, Pierrette Gaulin, Ed Ballik, Pauline Pocknell, Lida Konicek, and Cole Holland. Also included is a letter that was sent to Dr. Walker from a Lois Marino who had just completed the third volume of 'your colossal Liszt trilogy.' She writes 'It's hard to find words to express how much I enjoyed your biography. I can't even imagine the amount of time and the patience it took to do the research. But I count it as one of the greatest biographies I've read and thank you again for giving it to the world.' There's also a signed letter back to Ms. Marino from Alan Walker thanking her for her' charming letter'. The Souvenir Programme is 13 pages long. The letters were attached to the covers by a paperclip which has left an impression of itself on the front cover and next page or two, including the signed verso of the title page. The programme is in very nice condition. It is very clean, covers and pages both. It is a stapled binding and this binding is very solid from cover to cover. There are no markings. No attachments. And the aforementioned signatures are the only writing to be found anywhere in the programme (which is the way they are spelling the word even though the software in this program does not approve).
