Add to basketFirst edition of Rothbard's classic treatise on the 1930s Great Depression and its root causes. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in the month of publication, "October, 1963 To Frank Dierson: Staunch colleague for liberty and sound economics - With warmest regards, Murray N. Rothbard." The recipient, Frank Dierson, was a prominent New York lawyer and a fixture of Ludwig von Mises's seminar at New York University, which he began attending in 1946 and attended steadily from 1948 to 1955, and which he afterward called perhaps the most important experience of his life. Rothbard had come to that same seminar as a young economist and took from it the Austrian theory of the business cycle that he applies to the American collapse in this book, so the inscription is addressed to a fellow student of their common teacher. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket, toning to the front free endpaper. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed. Since it first appeared in 1963, America's Great Depression has been the definitive treatment of the causes of the depression. It opens with a theoretical treatment of business cycle theory, showing how an expansive monetary policy generates imbalances between investment and consumption. He proceeds to examine the Fed's policies of the 1920s, demonstrating that it was quite inflationary even if the effects did not show up in the price of goods and services. He showed that the stock market correction was merely one symptom of the investment boom that led inevitably to a bust.
