A collection of two novellas set in the mid-19th century. The first, "Morpho Eugenia, " is a Gothic fable that explores the multiple themes of earthly paradise and Darwin's theories of breeding and sexuality. "The Conjugal Angel, " a philosophical ghost story, bizarre and comic, is reminiscent of Possession, Byatt's 1990 Booker Prize winner. The book is bound in genuine leather and features gilded, sewn in pages and ribbon marker, simply superb quality, Franklin Library at its best. Leather hardcover nicely decorated with gilt butterflies. Three raised bands on the spine. All edges gilt. Patterned end papers. Color frontispiece by Rafal Olbinski. Black and White illustrations. Silk ribbon page marker. This is a pristine copy that still has the blue wrap protecting it.
