Item description from seller

[DOYLE, Arthur Conan] SMITH, Edgar W. (1894–1960). Appointment in Baker Street: A Repertory of the Characters, One and All, Who Walked and Talked with Sherlock Holmes. New York: The Pamphlet House, 1938. FIRST EDITION, LIMITED TO 250 NUMBERED COPIES, this copy No. 62. Octavo (8vo). 75 pp., followed by publisher’s advertisements. Original light-green wrappers bound in green linen-covered boards; spine lettered in gilt. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Smith on the verso of the title page: “To Laurence P. Dodge, with the author’s compliments, Edgar Smith, 1/20/39.” "Author's Note" tipped in next to Contents page. A cornerstone of American Sherlockiana by Edgar W. Smith, who directed the Baker Street Irregulars from 1940 until his death in 1960 and founded The Baker Street Journal in 1946. Appointment in Baker Street provides an alphabetical repertory of the characters populating the Holmes canon. This copy is particularly desirable as a presentation copy inscribed by Smith to fellow Sherlockian Laurence P. Dodge, from whose collection it descends. Provenance: From the Sherlock Holmes collection of Laurence P. Dodge, assembled beginning in the early 1930s and acquired directly from his descendants. Part of a long-held Sherlockian library containing early Doyle editions and classic works of Holmes scholarship. Contents clean and otherwise unmarked. Original wrappers exceptionally well preserved. Later binding remains sound and square, with light rubbing at the corners and spine ends. A Very Good plus presentation copy of a scarce Sherlockian publication, with the original wrappers preserved. Reference: De Waal 4267. [Attributes: Hard Cover; First Edition; Limited Edition; Signed.].…
