Add to basket1st edition. Hardcover. Original cream cloth with gilt spine title, extremely clean endpapers and pages, folding map of the Empty Quarter in rear pocket as called for, numerous other maps and photographs all in excellent order, in a very near fine dustjacket, not price-clipped, slight fading to the spine lettering as often. Thesiger's first and most important work, recounting his crossing of the Empty Quarter in 1946-7 and the three years after in which he continued to explore this harshest of deserts. Sir John Glubb described Thesiger as 'the last and certainly one of the greatest, of the British travellers among the Arabs', and Harry St John Philby called him 'probably the greatest of all explorers'. Without doubt this is a classic amongst travel books, and comes with a loose card laid in signed by Thesiger.
