About this Item
VG+ except for faded spine and strip on the back of the wrappers, signed on the title page by the author. Thomas Wolfe's first novel, the semi-autobiographical Look Homeward Angel, drew reactions of anger and horror from everyone from his mother to his educational mentor. Asheville residents from 1900 to 1920 scrambled to find themelves in its pages. tI was years before the furor died down and the greatness of the book and its author were recogized. Some people were, of course, thrilled to find themselves in the books, and others, such as D. Hiden Ramsey, owner and editor of the Asheville Citizen-Times, read the book at the request of Tom's sister Mabel and replied, "It's pretty raw in spots, Mabel. People will talk, of course, but it will blow over. The book has greatness." This booklet traces Asheville's reaction from the first days of shock to the acceptance of Wolfe as an important writer to the pride the community ultimately showed. I do not know who the author was - an except from Appalachian Heritage, published by the University of North Carolina Press in 1975, stated that Betty Lynch Williams was then teaching in the far West- I hope not because of this book! Looking at her bibliography, she did her homework and had access to a great deal of material on Wolfe. It is, expecially for a Wolfe fan, fascinating to read about the early reaction. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 44 pages; Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 17469
