First edition. Quarto. 65pp., printed rectos only (with a two-page addition; see below). Velobound red printed wrappers. Fine with a tiny bit of wear and soil; the letter and two-page addition are near fine with old folds for mailing, gentle creasing along the right edge, and the letter slightly toned along that edge. A double-association copy, Inscribed by Price to two friends at different dates. It was first Inscribed to "Howard," very likely author and publisher Howard Kaminsky: "for Howard- this early spring blooms (i hope)- from Reynolds with much love and thanks. 3 Mar 85." The rich 1985 TLS is also addressed to Howard. In it, he discusses his health (what would prove to be the effects of a tumor that would leave him in a wheelchair "continue to baffle all onlookers, especially me"), as well as his work on the National Book Critics Circle Award-winning novel *Kate Vaiden*. (He also asks if Howard reads manuscripts in the summer, leading us to believe it's Kaminsky.) Most notably, Price spends the first paragraph thoughtfully responding to a question Howard posed about a character in the play's response to a certain situation. Price writes that he was at first defensive, then decides Howard is correct: "So I've written a brief insert for the scene in question. [a]nd I enclose a copy for *your* copy." The addition, a continuation of a conversation between Taw and Porter, occupies two pages and is inserted after p.43. The play would be published in several editions in 1990, including the January issue of *American Theatre*; the two-page addition is not published there. Three years later, this copy of the script was *additionally* Inscribed to a longtime friend of Price's: "and now for George / also with love / 20 May 88." The recipient this time around, George Bixby, was a bookseller and publisher who published several Price titles under his Albondocani Press. A remarkable copy, with two associations, a TLS rich in content, and an unpublished addition. The script is very uncommon to begin with, almost certainly prepared in this format by Price for presentation.
