The Autobiography of Joseph Jefferson (Signed & Inscribed to Sir Edwin Arnold)

This is a signed and inscribed copy of "The Autobiography of Joseph Jefferson." 1890 1st edition; The Century Co.; New York. This presentation copy is signed on the half title page by Jefferson with an inscription to English poet, journalist, and editor Sir Edwin Arnold (best known for his epic poem "The Light of Asia"), as follows: "To Sir Edwin Arnold with the esteem and admiration of J. Jefferson / New York Oct. 30th 1891." The book contains numerous full-page illustrations. Gilt top page edges. Joseph Jefferson was a celebrated 19th-century American actor best known for his portrayal of Rip Van Winkle, a role he played for 40 years. In addition to his successful acting career, he was also a respected painter who exhibited his work and collected art. A unique copy linking 19th century American and British literary and theatrical circles. Condition: Soiling to the covers and spine. The cover corners are worn. Wear to the top and bottom edges of the spine, with a bit that has chipped away at the bottom of the spine. The hinges have cracked at the front and back of the book with the webbing exposed resulting in the covers being shaky. A packet of 3 end papers at the front have nearly pulled from the spine and are only attached at the center string. Jefferson's handwritten inscription appears in ink on the half title page. "30" is written in large pencil handwriting on the front end paper with "1.00" lined out in pencil. The pages are age-toned with occasional smudges, stains and foxing. A perfectly suitable reading copy enhanced by Jefferson's inscription to Arnold, though with numerous condition flaws. Overall the book is in Fair condition only.…
