Item description from seller

ANS (autograph note signed), on a piece of scrap paper which is offset from wet ink transfer (which is difficult to identify). The paper measures about 5.5" x 8.5", and there is a small remnant at one corner, clearly showing that Ginsberg tried to nearly rip a sheet of 8.5" x 11" copy paper. Two small dampstains to the paper, only one just barely affecting one word; overall very good. The note reads, in full: "Friday Nite 12/30/88 9:45 PM. Dear Peter, no sign or signal from you for a week--are you OK? Knock + say hello so I won't be worried-- XX Happy New Year, Allen. I'm recovering strength + have been out to the [???] yesterday." A highly personal, revealing ephemeron from the later years of Ginsberg's long and sometimes difficult relationship with Peter Orlovsky. According to archivist Bill Morgan's biography of Ginsberg's personal life, "I Celebrate Myself" (Penguin, 2007), Ginsberg had suffered a gall bladder attack in December 1988, and had it surgically removed at Lenox Hill Hospital that month. His recovery was slow, and at the same time, his relationship with Orlovsky was suffering. Morgan writes: "On March 27 [1989], Allen was granted a court order of protection against Peter Orlovsky. For weeks Peter had been in his apartment next to Allen's drinking heavily and raving madly. He banged on the wall that separated his room from Allen's and cursed loudly through the door whenever Allen tried to talk calmly with him." (p. 607). This note would seem to date from the beginning of this period of separation, with Ginsberg presumably having spoken to Orlovsky about a week prior to the date of 12/30/88 (per the note). This fact would actually clarify Morgan's finding that Orlovsky had been separated from Ginsberg not for "weeks," but for at least three full months by the time Ginsberg secured the court order. Much has been written about the relationship between these two poets, who considered their relationship "a marriage sealed by vows." While it was an open relationship, and Orlovsky was in fact bisexual, it was nevertheless a very long-term association whose ups and downs are inextricable from the poetry that both of them produced. Ginsberg autographs and correspondence are not generally rare; he was generous with his signature, and was a devoted correspondent. However, we have found few examples of such a personal and private note, which sheds light on a personal relationship. There is little doubt that, in a time of tension and separation, this note was written hastily by Ginsberg in his apartment, then slipped, by him, under the front door of his newly estranged partner's adjacent apartment.…
