About this Item
SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the title page as follows: "Merry Christmas | Tom J. Scalese." 4to. (23 cm.) [6]1-116p. Introduction by Dorothy Scalese Long (presumably the author's sister). Born in Galata, Montana in 1917, Thomas June Scalese grew up in the Sweet Grass Hills of Montana, a place he loved all his life. Scalese served in WWII and worked as a pumper in the Kevin oil fields for twelve years, before he happily returned to the family homestead full-time in 1957, where he lived until a few years before he passed away in 2017. He had the unique gift of "water witching" and was successful in finding water for many different people in various locations in North Central Montana. He was heavily involved in his community, serving on the local school board, working with 4-H and Boy Scouts and as a Mason for over 50 years. Along the way he managed to write two books about his experiences and about life in North Central Montana: AS i REMEMBER (2004) and the book offered here. Some of the subject found in this book include the following: oil business, "Fey Bell #1," buffalo jumps, Bill Skabronski, Fort Benton, Gold Butte, Big Game, Glacier National Park, Montana weather, Shelby, Walter Seitz, Errol Fritz, homesteading in Montana, and the like. "Slipper" in the title refers to an alternative name for Gold Butte, Lady Slipper Mountain, so-called because the shale that has been deposited along its side looks from a distance like a lady's slipper.
