Quarto (10 in. x 6 1/4 in.) Blue boards with black cloth-tape spine a with black woodcut of a blackbird in flight with a ring in its beak, to front board. Gilt lettering to spine. Fading and discoloration to boards from exposure to sun, and a bit of rubbing to extremities of this otherwise very solidly bound book. 22 Ballads chosen from the Oxford Book of Ballads, most with a headpiece woodcut by Douglas Percy Bliss. Some ballads have tailpieces. SIGNED by Douglas Percy Bliss to front free endpaper. An advertisement for an "Exhibition of British Contemporary Art at Rosenberg & Helft, Ltd. 31, Bruton Street, London.Private View, Wednesday, Jan. 20th and until Feb. 20th" with a Bliss woodcut on the verso ("The House of Usher", dated "34", laid in. Douglas Percy Bliss (28 January 1900 11 March 1984 was a Scottish painter.Bliss's own art was exhibited around Britain. There was an exhibition of his work in the Glasgow School of Art, in the northern hemisphere summer of 1998. Much of the work of Bliss's youth has been lost. Most of his engravings were unpublished before the beginning of the War in 1939 and his entire collection was stolen during the Blitz. Decades later sixteen degraded blocks were identified at an auction. Most split when printing was attempted. Lord Barnard came home and found his wife in bed with Little Musgrave. His wife was unrepentant and Barnard mutilated her. ".Arise, arise, thou Little Musgrave, And put thy clothes on; It shall ne'er be said in my country I have kill'd a naked man."
