Richard North Patterson is an American fiction writer, trial lawyer and political commentator. He has won many awards for his work, including an Edgar Allen Poe Award and the Grand Prix de Litterature Policiere. He has held many positions within the political world in America, and now serves on Washington-based boards which deal with gun violence and political reform. This particular work is Patterson's twelfth novel, following the presidential leadership of fictional character President Kilcannon. Patterson portrays the high-stakes of politics and morality, questioning how far people are willing to go.
