Kate Cavanaugh, a caterer from a Cincinnati suburb, witnesses drug abuse at her friend Cindy Schmitz's wedding reception and then is visited by Jasmine Woods, a friend and former hippie. Soon Kate finds herself forced to turn sleuth in order to protect Cindy and Jasmine. This second novel in the series offers a tough mystery and a cast of sympathetic characters, although the pace slows in places. Subplots draw on both serious topics (Kate's battle with breast cancer) and lighter fare (Kate's adventures in the catering business, complete with delectable recipes). John's novel will appeal in general to readers who like strong, thoughtful women sleuths confronting contemporary problems and in particular to fans of perhaps crime fiction's hottest new trend, the foodie sleuth (including fellow caterer Goldy Schulz in Diane Davidson Mott's series).
