Synopsis:

A series of poems tells the story of a young woman coming to terms with her past, from her Southern childhood to her return home as an adult to help her dying mother

Reviews: To her credit, Conroy puts on a bravura performance in this collection of poems, frequently using models from Anglo-Saxon lyrics and Christopher Smart to Plath, Stevens, and H.D. Although these poems glimmer with a richly textured, modulated language, they remain curiously abstract: "passion delights a crystal fork where lightning clarity chuckles like thunder." Conroy unabashedly uses poetry to exorcise the demons of her past, but the extravagantly febrile style distances rather than holds the reader. Her method, as she writes in one poem, is to "bring mythic peacocks with their fine excess/ and let the feathers tell flamboyant stories." For all their verbal brilliance, these poems are unsatisfying. For large collections of contemporary poetry only.
