Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 50 pages. Published in 2009. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of Mechthild Op Gen Oorth's finest achievements. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Graphic Design Thorsten Lonnecker: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Mechthild Op Gen Oorth. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Dusselfdorf, Germany to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Mechthild Op Gen Oorth's "Berlin Berlin". Evocative, sepia-toned images of the beloved city, all of them taken in the first decade of the 21st century, yet somehow recall a much earlier, and more serene, time and place. "Her fine art photography is black-and-white and more important, is exclusively analogue [instead of digital camera]. Mechthild Op Gen Oorth trusts in the expressive nature of analogue images, in its constructive, creative process, and does not use any form of computer-image-editing technique. Her emphasis lies in the motives which are created without any casual context whatsoever, and thus distinguishes between the process of fine art photography and that of photo-journalism or commercial photography" (Publisher's blurb). Well, such disdain is rather unnecessary: None of these gossamer, soft-focussed images could possibly have been captured by the hard-edged, clarifying tendency of the digital camera. Mechthild's technical rigor and insistence on the analogue camera are consistent with her highly personal vision of, indeed hankering for (as her title unmistakably suggests), a Lost Berlin whose vestigial presence is her great subject. The images are (there is no other word) beautiful, speak eloquently for themselves, and for a city that has the irresistible pull of a dream. An absolute "must-have" title for Mechthild Op Gen Oorth collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by the photographer: "With kind regards! Mechthild". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. There is no recipient named. Laid-in is the Official Letter about the book (written on her letterhead stationery), also very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in blue ink-pen by her. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with toned plates. One of the finest photographers of our time. A fine copy. Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 21311

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. **Inscribed!** Fourth Impression of the 1918 copyrighted work. (The year 1918 is also printed at the bottom of the title page.) A Good+ 12mo hardcover in a fair to good dust jacket. Briefly inscribed on the ffep as follows: 'To / Eleanor / From / Guy / New York, N.Y. / July 21, 1921. The 'Guy' signature on the ffep matches the 'Guy' portion of the signature of author 'Arthur Guy Emprey' as it appears in the facsimile letter on the pre-Contents page. Remaining contents, 369 pp., + ads, 64 illus., with a tissue guard to the frontispiece illus., appear to be clean and securely bound albeit slightly age tanned. The red cloth boards with stamped gilt titling are bumped and rubbed in the corners and in the spine head and tail edges, and there is a small scuff on the upper board. There is also a slight bit of cocking to the spine. The dj, which has ads on the underside, shows some wear and aging. It is chipped along the top and bottom edges and flap edges. Small 1 cm. hole on front cover. NOT an ex-library copy! Inscribed by Author. Seller Inventory # u2789

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. In German. Possibly a first edition, 1953 on the title page, NAP. This book is signed and inscribed to the former Assistant Secretary Of War and US High Commissioner to Postwar Germany, John J. McCloy. The inscription is in English. It reads: 'Mr. John McCloy, with the compliments of the author F. Friedensburg, Berlin 30. (?). 53.' Not sure what that middle number indicates, looks like 'III', maybe March (take a look at the photo). So this is quite a unique book. There are very few around, and it has been inscribed to Mr. McCloy. This will also be the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet. I've given the book only a Fair condition rating due to the wear on the spine. Just above the bottom edge of the spine there's a piece of it missing and a little above that there's a good deal of the orange overlay that's missing. The front and rear cover are in quite decent shape. The lettering on the front is nicely bright. The cover edges and corners look very good. The binding of the book is quite solid. The pages are all nicely tight. So are the covers. I did find one instance of a white vertical strip neatly affixed at the juncture between two facing pages. There was clearly a crack between the two pages. You can still see just a spot of it if you look all the way from the side. Nevertheless, both facing pages are very solidly bound from top to bottom. I turned over all the pages after that to check whether there were other such repairs and did not find another. The pages are very clean. I thought I saw one spot, but scrolling through now I'm not finding any. The pages are definitely tanned or toned, though pretty uniformly. This would be due to the type of paper. The end papers have a different kind of paper and are not toned. The pages are in nice shape. I'm not finding any conspicuous creasing, no placeholder creases, no turned-down corners. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. Mr. McCloy penciled some page numbers off the top edge of the blank verso of the front end paper. On a few of these pages you'll find a penciled line beside a paragraph. That and the signed inscription are the only writing to be found in the book. There are a nice number of photographs, a few maps and tables. They all appear to be in excellent condition. The book is light so the cost of international shipping will be less than the quoted price. If it's purchased by an international buyer just accept the original shipping price which is $44.00, and then I'll put the order through at a reduced shipping price of approximately $27.00 give or take a couple dollars. That new price will come back to you when the order is confirmed. Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 004505
