Small 4to. Stiff green wrappers. vi, 127pp. Very good. Faint wear to outer wrappers, though internally fine. Tight and attractive first edition of this standard reference -- with a fine autograph addition: Tipped to the inside front wrapper is a Typed Letter Signed from McCrum, 1p, 5½" X 8½", Wellesley, MA, 1943 November 23. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93), at that time a U.S. Army sergeant stationed in San Francisco. Near fine. On "Wellesley College Library" letterhead, McCrum writes, "It is a pleasure to send you the only photograph we have of the bust of Elizabeth Barrett Browning by Story. Such a request from a member of the armed forces is of genuine interest to us here at Wellesley." Bold full signature.
