Vol.1 without the Umlaut on the title page (see below) -- 2 volumes, 7 3/8" x 4 3/8"; (190 x 110 mm). Book 1: [2] (both volumes have their half title), xii, 240; Book 2 [2], iv, 256, [1], [1, printer's imprint], [1, ads]. --- Published by C. Baldwyn, 1823; and the second volume by James Robins & Co., London, and Joseph Robins Junior. & Co., Dublin, 1826. First English edition, with the first printing title-page for Volume I, without an umlaut over the "a" in "Märchen" in the title. "A few copies of the engraved title were printed off before the umlaut was added in 'Märchen'" -- -- With the "Directions To The Binder" (a list of plates) on page 218; the title of the tale on page 9: "The Travelling Musicians" has no additional words. In the "Notes" at the end of the volume, the note referring to "Preface" comes last, not first. Signed bindings by Zaehnsdorf in full black crushed morocco. Covers triple-ruled in gilt. Spines tooled and in double-ruled gilt compartments, with title, author's last name and VOL I and VOL II, as well as publication dates at the bottom. Board edges ruled in gilt, turn-ins tooled in gilt. All paper edges gilt, dark blue fabric endpapers. Front boards are separated on both volumes, back boards cracked, but connected, binding solid. White endpapers and half titles with light spotting, title pages darkened and soiled.
