Hatcher became on January 1, 1968, the first African-American Mayor of Gary, Indiana and the first elected African-American mayor of a U.S. metropolitan city and the first in the state of Indiana. He served as mayor until 1987, and during his tenure, he became internationally known as a fervent and prolific civil rights spokesman, delivering speeches alongside Martin Luther King, Robert F. Kennedy, Jesse Jackson, and other historic proponents of the civil rights movement. Surprisingly, material SIGNED by him is quite SCARCE. The book is Near Fine, top edge soiled, small bump bottom edge front board. In a Very Good dustjacket, two small chips and small closed tear top edge. A unique piece of Indiana and African-American political history !
