First edition, first printing. Signed by W. E. B. Du Bois on the front free endpaper and dated 18 Jan. 1937. Bound in publisher's black cloth lettered in white; lacking the dust jacket. Very Good. Cloth with slight fraying and wear to extremities, covers lightly soiled. Contents tanned and contemporary former owner's gift inscription at rear pastedown. Du Bois' self-proclaimed magnum opus which challenged the standard academic view and helped spark "the long attempt to rescue black history in America." Signed first editions are scarce.
