A signed presentation copy of this first edition thus of Frank Harris's Chicago-set novel. The 'Illustrated and Definitive Edition'. Inscribed by the author to the front free endpaper: 'To Mariano J. Lareute from his friend, the author, after a memorable Evening's talk - an oasis in the desert. Frank Harris, Jan 1921'.First published in 1908, this is a first edition thus, being the 'Illustrated and Definitive Edition' of 1920, the first edition to feature illustrations.Illustrated with four plates. Collated, complete.A novel about the Haymarket affair and the late nineteenth century labour disputes in Chicago. In a 1909 introduction to the work, the author explains that from researching the events 'I came to the conclusion that six out of seven men punished in Chicago were as innocent as I was, and that four of them had been murdered according to law.' In the publisher's original cloth binding. Boards bright. Light rubbing to back strip head and tail, with back strip age toned. Front hinge strained, and lightly tender. Rear hinge strained but firmly held. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd light handling mark. Very Good.
