About this Item
Original book sculpture that questions and criticizes the American military-political machine, using collaged news clippings and a metal figure impaling earth on spiked hands. Bruno Pasquier-Desvignes defies classification. THE NEW YORK TIMES calls him "part tinkerer and part storyteller, a cross between Alexander Calder and Jean Tinguely;" filmmaker James Ivory compares him to Picasso, noting his ability to "pick up any old thing lying around, see its possibilities for transformation and then turn it into a new and enchanting thing" (RURAL INTELLIGENCE). Pasquier-Desvignes's book sculptures highlight his ingenuity, creativity, and humor, as he toys with the idea of a codex as a container. This 1973 copy of THE STATESMAN'S YEAR-BOOK lends a certain weight to Pasquier-Desvignes's selection of clippings and his ominous metal figure, which stabs an image of the earth with its sharp appendages. Created during the Iran-Iraq war and during the Iran-Contra deals, Pasquier-Desvignes used this sculpture to express his uncertainty about the state of the world. 8'' x 5''. Original red cloth binding with paper clippings pasted to front board and spine. Bookblock fused with glue, with rectangular recess cut into center. Metal figure with impaled paper earth mounted inside recess. Newspaper and magazine clippings pasted to front endpapers and in and around recess. Signed by Pasquier-Desvignes to front flyleaf and dated July 1985. Binding with scuff to fore-edge of rear board. Leaves slightly warped from glue. Sound. Seller Inventory # 45500
