Holmes â " one of the most influential American physicians and authors of the 19th century â " discusses the evolving boundaries of scientific understanding, the advances in microscopic anatomy, and the shifting responsibilities of the medical profession during a period marked by intellectual and social change. The text offers Holmesâ s reflections on the relationship between science, medical practice, and the moral duties of physicians in a rapidly modernizing world, making it an essential primary source in the history of American medical education. This copy is particularly notable as a presentation copy signed and inscribed by Holmes to â George T. Bigelow,â a prominent Massachusetts jurist and classmate of Holmes. Presentation copies from Holmes are desirable, especially when the recipient was a known figure in New England legal and academic circles. Condition & Binding:ÂBound in original dark brown publisherâ s cloth with blind-stamped decorative borders and central medallion. Spine shows some wear at head and tail, with light rubbing and expected age toning. Corners lightly bumped, cloth slightly bubbled in areas, and a few faint surface marks on boards. Interior is very clean, crisp, and tightly bound with no foxing and strong paper quality. Front endpaper shows the important Holmes inscription; rear endpaper shows additional 19th-century ownership signature. Overall condition: Very good.
