Octavo, blue hardcover, spine embossed with bright pink lettering, x, 190 pp., frontispiece, illustrated with eight double-sided black-and-white plates of photographs. Spine ends bumped and a little rubbed, tail edge of back cover a little rubbed, some fading on spine ends and top edges of covers, foxing on front endpapers, small white "The Cornstalk Bookshop" sticker on tail-edge of inside front cover, slight browning on leaves throughout, dust-jacket a little worn at edges; otherwise a very good copy. First edition, signed by the author. Few who recognise Nancy Bird's fame as a flyer really know what her achievements were. In this volume, she tells her amazing story in detail and in her own words. At 13, Nancy already knew that she wanted to fly. A few years later, she took lessons from Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith (she was his first student) and, at the age of 19, became the youngest woman in the then British Empire to receive a commercial pilot's licence. Further successes, along with some challenges, saw Nancy become a professional pilot and found the Australian Women Pilots' Association. She was a truly remarkable person and a trailblazer for women in aviation. The front endpaper of this inspiring volume is inscribed and signed by Nancy Bird as follows: "With best wishes, Nancy Bird". Loosely inserted in the front of this work are six clippings of articles about Nancy from various Sydney newspapers, dated between 1990 and 2002. Seller Inventory # 4983

BIRD, Nancy
Used Hardcover First Edition

Seller: Quair Books PBFA, Leeds, United Kingdom

Seller rating 5 out of 5 stars 5-star rating, Learn more about seller ratings

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. 8vo, pp. 190 + b/w frontis and plates. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in pink gilt. Bands of fading to edges, pushing to heel of spine. Inscribed by Bird in blue biro to title page: "To Mrs. Healey, a camilla [?] fan, from a Camilla fan & remembering a warm cloudless day in Canberra. Affectionately, Nancy Bird.", gently toned, else, clean and tight. In the slightly surreal monochrome illustrated dust jacket, featuring a montage of Russell Roberts' portrait of Bird (c.1930) over a cloud-laden sky: edgewear, chipped at head of spine and top edge, a few short closed tears, amateur taping on reverse. Very good/ good+ A pleasing inscribed copy of the pioneering Australian aviator's memoir in the striking original dust jacket; known as "The Angel of the Outback," for her aerial ambulance work in New South Wales, Bird had received her commercial licence at 19, becoming "the youngest woman to hold such a license in the British Empire". In 1950, eleven years before Born to Fly was published, Nancy Bird Walton (19152009) founded the Australian Women Pilots' Association (AWPA). Seller Inventory # 3027
