Add to basketA handsome dark blue leather Collector's Edition of this very popular book, considered as one of the best books about baseball. Originally published in 1972, this is the story of the Brooklyn Dodgers during the golden age of baseball and Kahn's experience growing up and growing older with them. With gold gilt cover and page edges, moire silk endpapers and bound-in silk bookmark. Includes the Publisher's Note and Certificate of Authenticity from Easton Press that was signed by the author in 2003. The title of The Boys of Summer is drawn from a poignant Dylan Thomas poem that describes "the boys of summer in their ruin." Author Roger Kahn, a former Brooklynite, vividly recalls hearing the poem recited live by the poet himself in New York. Interestingly, when Kahn initially proposed this evocative title to his publisher, it faced resistance. The publisher deemed it too poetic, but Kahn persisted. Little did he know that this decision would shape his future. At the time, Kahn's financial situation was precarious, with only a few hundred dollars left in his bank account. However, when the book was finally published, it became a resounding success. The Boys of Summer transcended mere baseball nostalgia; it became a classic, captivating millions of readers and going through an impressive 90 printings. Kahn's narrative weaves together multiple threads: his own youth as a passionate Brooklyn Dodgers fan, his experiences as a reporter, and the intimate stories shared with him by the aging Dodgers. These players, the "Boys of Summer," formed the core of the 1940s-1950s Brooklyn Dodger teams. Through Kahn's lens, we glimpse their triumphs, struggles, and enduring camaraderie. Sadly, the last surviving member of this legendary group, Carl Erskine, passed away on April 16, 2024, leaving behind a legacy etched in baseball lore. Don Henley's song "The Boys of Summer" is taken from this publication. An absolutely fascinating reading experience that transcends only sports enthusiasts.
