First edition with inscription by Arthur Crook, who provides the introduction to this volume. Volume is bound in brown cloth, with bright stamped gilt lettering to spine. Book shows very light shelfwear. Three very small dark spots appear on top edge of text block. Binding is firm. Pages are clean and bright. x/203 pages. Inscription on front flyleaf reads "For (illegible name), with / gratitude as well / as affection. / Arthur / June 1, 1961." Arthur Crook (1912-2005) was a long-serving editor of the Times Literary Supplement (1959-1974), and "the last to insist on the anonymity of contributors. A convivial figure on the literary scene, Crook was a dogged defender of editorial standards who would pounce on a howler, and ruthlessly excise any clichés or redundant verbiage."
