This is a 'Signed Binding' by BICKERS & Son. Bound in full smooth RED leather, with a bright gilt heraldic device to the front cover. 5 Raised bands to the spine and 5 gilt decorated compartments, plus a title compartment with a black leather, gilt titled, label. The front and back covers have some impressed lines, small ink stains and faint scratches, the tips of the corners are worn, and the spine has a tiny sliver of loss to the very top of the spine. All edges marbled (somewhat faded as usual). Having said all that, the book is still handsome and looks good on the shelf (See Images) . Internally marbled endpapers, and the front free blank endpaper has a scrawled note awarding this as a Prize to J. H Goodall of GODOLPHIN SCHOOL, Hammersmith. The front cover's heraldic device having a Dolphin at it's top. The Prizewinners much neater name written to the top of the same page. NO other Inscriptions or Marks - a Very Clean, Tight and Bright text. A particularly scarce 19th Century 'folklore' title covering customs and superstitions of common holidays in various regions of Britain, descriptions of ceremonies or acts performed to avoid bad luck, and delves into the origins of local folklore and myths, etc. Including Valentines Ancient customs being converted for use on Christian holidays; All Fools Day; Practices of Mummers; Robin Hood's relation to May Day; Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot; Apples/Apple Trees/ Remedies for Toothache; Ass-Ridlin; Bear Baiting; Bride Ale; etc, etc, etc. The Red binding presumably related to the color red being irritating to witches! ? !
