Grade 5 Up The young girl Bronwen, armed with her trowel, defeats the evil shape-shifter. Dickey's four-part narrative poem gives Bronwen's adventures in excruciatingly lengthy detail. The large black-and-white drawings are strong but fail to relieve the plodding language and dragging action of the poem. Epic poems should move and Bronwen more often than not stands still. Stick to true epics like Homer's Odyssey or Carroll's Hunting of the Snark, and deliver readers from the likes of Bronwen, the Traw, and the Shape-Shifter.Kathleen D.
