About this Item

Description:

First edition, stated. Inscribed and signed by Bucher on the page opposite the title page. Bucher (1927-2004) was in command of the Pueblo during an ill-conceived spying mission when it was attacked (one sailor was killed) and boarded by the North Korean military, who then held the crew of 82 as POWs for almost a year; the Pueblo is the only USN commissioned ship held by a foreign power--it's a tourist attraction in Pyongyang, North Korea. Bucher was absolved of any wrongdoing and continued a career that won him a dozen medals. The book is square and unmarked; corners sharp, tail of spine bumped. The dust jacket is not price-clipped (original price $7.95); chipped and edgeworn; Brodart protected. Seller Inventory # 015296

Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First. Lloyd Mark Bucher (1927 - 2004) was an officer in the United States Navy, who is best remembered as the captain of USS Pueblo, which was seized by North Korea on January 23, 1968 The Pueblo was an environmental research ship, initially in service during World War II, then converted to a spy ship in 1967 She gathered intelligence and oceanographic information, in particular monitoring electronic and radio signals from North Korea On January 23 1968, the ship was attacked and captured by a North Korean vessel, in what became known as the "Pueblo incident", or alternatively, as the "Pueblo crisis" The seizure of the ship and her 83 crew members, one of whom was killed in the attack, came less than a week after President Lyndon B Johnson's State of the Union address, a week before the start of the Tet Offensive in South Vietnam and just three days after 31 men of North Korea's KPA Unit 124 had crossed the Korean Demilitarized Zone and killed 26 South Koreans in an attempt to attack the South Korean Blue House (executive mansion) in Seoul The taking of Pueblo and the abuse and torture of her crew during the subsequent eleven months became a major Cold War incident, raising tensions between western and eastern powers This book has a black cloth spine on white cloth covered boards with silver titles on the spine The is very slight sunning at the top edge and darkening on the endpapers at the internal joints, apparently from the glue used in binding No other marks or damage The unclipped DJ has slight edge wear and a small chip missing at the top of the jacket spine There are also two thin parallel lines on the back of the jacket, where apparently the book was laid on something sticky and when removed, it lost some of the finish on the jacket It is inscribed by Commander Bucher on the reverse of the half title page, facing the title page 447 pp. Seller Inventory # AA1934
