Burlls / with the best wishes of / C. G. Woodson / Dec 21, 1918" A lovely example of this first edition of Woodson's first major book publication -- his classic study of African American migration in the United States. Signed copies of this early work are quite scarce. Carter Godwin Woodson (1875 1950) was an American historian, author, journalist, and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). He was one of the first scholars to study the history of the African diaspora, including African-American history. A founder of The Journal of Negro History in 1916, Woodson has been called the "father of black history." In February 1926, he launched the celebration of "Negro History Week," the precursor of Black History Month. Woodson was an important figure to the movement of Afrocentrism, due to his perspective of placing people of African descent at the center of the study of history and the human experience. Woodson became affiliated with the Washington, D.C., branch of the NAACP and its chairman Archibald Grimké. The recipient of this book - Mr. James C. Burlls - was listed as an employee of the Library of Congress (1910-1922+) in the Colored Professional, Clerical and Business Directory of Baltimore City . He was also the secretary of The Crispus Attucks Relief Fund Association and a member/contributor of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (of which Carter G. Woodson was Director of Research and Editor). They lived within 5 blocks of each other in Washington. ; Signed by Author.
