Signed first printing of this collection of amusing stories from the village of CHITTER CHAT, a quaint 19th-century community full of interesting characters. Margaret Cabell Self was a riding instructor who began her career as a writer as a way to support her horses during the Depression. While many of her early books focused on equestrian topics, by the 1940s she began to broaden her topics to nostalgic and humorous stories of the late 19th century. 9'' x 6''. Original grey cloth boards. Original unclipped ($1.75) three-color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated in black and white. 72 pages. Signed by Self to front flyleaf, dated Aug 1946. Small early gift inscription to upper flyleaf. Jacket with light edgewear and chipping, a couple short closed tears; some sunning to spine. Binding with a hint of toning to edges, scattered faint foxing to textblock. Interior clean and bright. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.
