ROBINSON in ink on first free endpaper with Baumgartner's address, his ink name at top of title page. 8vo, approximately 225 x 145 mm, 9 x 5½ inches, 3 folding maps,15 full page photographic illustrations with tissue guards plus 1 double page illustration and 2 single page maps, pages: xii, 1-315, plus 1 page of adverts, original publisher's green cloth, gilt lettering to spine, top edge gilt. Faint stain to upper cover and small dark spot to spine, pale age-browning and spotting to pastedowns and endpapers, corners very slightly bumped, foxing to page edges, bookseller's old ink stamp to top of first pastedown, a pale brown spot to lower corners on 6 pages, otherwise a very good clean copy. John Wilson Robinson (mentioned 3 times in this book, pages 247, 255 and 260). and Baumgartner were both early climbers in the Lake District. See The Journal of the Fell and Rock Climbing Club, Vol.1, No.1 1907: "Amongst British mountaineers the name of John Robinson is a household word, and the number of members of the Alpine and other kindred Clubs with whom he was on terms of closest intimacy, and who have enjoyed the privilege of climbing with him amongst his native fells is very large", with a photograph of Robinson. "Baumgartner was not only one of the earliest rock-climbers in Wales and the Lakes, but he was also a pioneer among the Alps".
