First Edition. Cloth, 323pp. Illustrated with 21 plates, many from old photographs. 13 Appendices. An important account of the Battle of the Washita and the efforts of the military, under the leadership of General Philip Sheridan, to defeat the hostile Cheyennes, Comanches, and Kiowa Indians. The author's work is critical of Custer and is considered to be an important counter-balance to the many works that are supportive of Custer's actions. With appendices giving the text of official government reports, letters, and official accounts of the battle. Covers the Washita Battle and includes additional information from other sources including Sheridan's and Custer's official reports. Information on the Sand Creek Massacre, Medicine Lodge Treaty, etc. A fine copy in black & white dust jacket. We are unaware of priority of dust jackets for this book. We've offered copies with the pictorial dust jacket a few times before, and have a copy in inventory right now, but this is the first time we've been able to offer a copy in the black & white printed dust jacket. We believe that, with the lack of any printing of the inside of the flaps, and the simplicity of cover design, that this dust jacket precedes the pictorial dust jacket. Either way, it's a scarce work. This dust jacket is internally reinforced along top edge, has very slight chipping to top edge, and shows moderate foxing to front and rear panel. Signed by Brill on front free-endpaper. Seller Inventory # 52565
