Stated First Edition in the First State Dust Jacket; A near fine book in a very good ORIGINAL dust jacket. SIGNED on a Roland Comstock bookplate affixed to the front paste down (Comstock was a noted book collector with a collection of over 50,000 volumes; his collections have been the subject of a number of publications and auctions). This is an outstanding copy of this Pulitzer Prize winning novel, very scarce in the first edition/first printing with an intact first state jacket, particularly signed. The book itself is in near fine condition with only mild bumping to the spine ends and some mild darkening to the exterior text block, else fine. Housed in the first state dust jacket (with The City Boy blurb on the back panel) that is clean, bright, and intact; moderate rubbing and chipping are present to the spine ends, corners, and flap edges with minimal loss of material, some light age toning is present to the back panel and flaps, and a few creases are apparent again to the flap and panel edges. Please review scans for further explanation. Not price clipped or ex-library. Overall, a lovely copy of this scarce novel, an important entry in World War II fiction and the basis for the film starring Humphrey Bogart. In archival protection and ships in a sturdy box.
