AUTHOR: Versatile artist, born in London, who did a foundation course at Epsom College of Art, 1979-80, and was then self-taught. From 1983-94 Norris was exhibitions assistant at the RIBA Heinz Gallery. His work was mainly Neo-Romantic landscape, but some was architecture-based. Group exhibitions included British Art 1900-Today, John Bonham, Murray Feely Fine Art, 1989; The Discerning Eye, Mall Galleries, 1992; and Artists Books, Tate Gallery, 1995. Selected books included The Silent Landscape, 1988; Lijepa Nasa Domovina, 1992; and A Short Walk in Dorset, 1995. Norris also produced a series of films and videos, including Events on the Downs, 1991; Sites, Signs and Ancient Shrines, 1991-5; and A Walk Along the Newbury Bypass, 1996. Among his solo shows were Building the New Sainsbury Wing, paintings, National Gallery (Norris recorded progress on-site, 1988-91), and An Exhibition of Paintings and Drawings which Record Aspects of the Restoration to Sir John Soanes Museum, at the Museum, both 1991; Calm Blast Echo Calm, paintings stemming from the Croatian conflict, One-Off Gallery, 1992; and Sites, Signs and Ancient Shrines, Rocket Gallery, 1995 BOOK RESUME: Calm Splash Ripple Ripple Calm by Andrew Norris in 1993 is a part of his exploration into the relationship between text, image, and form, focusing on the landscape and the act of reading. This work exemplifies Norriss interest in how the structure of a book can influence its content and the readers experience. Significant for its innovative approach to the artists book genre, it challenges traditional notions of a book by incorporating tactile elements and requiring the reader to engage physically with the object to access its content. The work reflects Norriss broader artistic practice, which often blurs the lines between book, sculpture, and performance. Calm Splash Ripple Ripple Calm is an endless book consisting of 16 panels that require four opening, closing, and rotating operations to view all panels and return to the starting point. The narrative unfolds as a stone splashes into a pool, and as the ripples dissipate, the reflection of a passing cloud is observed, with only a few reeds breaking the waters surface remaining constant. The books structure and content invite the reader to contemplate the transient nature of moments and the interplay between stillness and movement.
