It was not surprising that Brazilian civilian and military leaders alike should turn to General Humberto de Alencar Castello Branco in their choice of a new president after the fall of Joao Goulart in 1964. As chief of staff of the army, and as the reorganizer of Brazil's advanced army officer instruction, Castello Branco had become the most influential molder of the thinking of young army officers. His military doctrine had become the doctrine of the Brazilian army. His deep democratic convictions, his strong sense of justice, his belief in legality in government, and his opposition to the politicization of the military also had a profound effect on the political thought of modern Brazil.

In this biography of Castello Branco up to his inauguration as president in April, 1964, John W. F. Dulles forms an impressive picture of a diligent student--an admirer of literature, ideas, and dialogue--who followed a military career because of family tradition and because of the educational opportunities it provided; of a dedicated family man whose letters to his wife and children reflect the gentle, loving side of his character; and of a thorough military professional known for his demand for discipline, his fairness, his brilliant military planning, and his willingness to make hard decisions and to accept difficult responsibilities.

Dulles also describes here for the first time Castello Branco's major influence, as head of operations, on the actions of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force on the Italian front in World War II and his key role as chief planner and coordinator in the overthrow of President Goulart.

Castello Branco's personal papers and letters and the author's interviews with the men and women who knew Castello Blanco and worked with him form the basis of this study, which shows why the life of this tough, sentimental, and intellectual general is so closely associated with the course of twentieth-century Brazilian history.
