Alphonse Séché inscribed and signed his book of poems, "La Cathédrale du Silence" to esteemed literary scholar Arthur Knodel. Mr. Knodel was a world recognized expert on the poetry of Saint - John Perse, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1960. Alphonse Séché (1876 - 1964) was a French poet, journalist, and theatre director. His "Tales With Eyes Closed". published in 1905, was a mixture of dream and fantasy, and effectively announced the arrival of Surrealism. Other essays warned of the advent of a highly mechanized war of extermination. He was a prescient thinker. His poetry was quite popular. The poems in this book are entirely in French. The inscription is written in ink on the half-title : "A Monsieur Arthur Knodel / qui est en grand American / Alphonse Séché / qui est un français moyen" . On the front cover is a line depiction of a cathedral window printed in gray - text is printed in red. The rear cover is blank. Text-block edges are rough-trimmed. *********************************** CONDITION - VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book which remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- Spine is darkened and has slight splitting at the head; spine joints are rubbed; overall surface rub is mild; edges have scattered modest nicking; corner tips are softly bumped / BINDING -- The whole of the book has a slight lean to the front; the book has obviously been read, and thus is not as tight as when issued, the leaves opening widely - however, no leaves are detached or loose. / INTERIOR -- Clean and free of writing and marking but for the author's signed inscription. A clipping from a French newspaper concerning M. Séché was laid between to pages and has created an offprint toning to the adjoining pages. I have left the clipping in place.
