A fascinating study of the work of Cephas Thompson (1775-1856) a self-taught, itinerant Massachusetts portrait painter. The majority of the subjects of his 130 Rhode Island portraits, like one of the founders of Brown Universiy, engaged in the slave trade. A carefully researched biography of each subject is included.
