Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy's, Pater-Noster Row, London. §Eight cantos in iambic pentameter. First line 'From fonts ambrosial, far beneath the sod'. Printed by Vigurs, Stroud. Six page list of subscribers. Not in Jackson, Johnson, or Kohler. Dedicated to Edward Jenner ('Sir, May I presume to dedicate a Poem which professes to recommend the medical virtues of the Cheltenham springs, to you, who are a physician well acquainted with their properties and efficacy?'). The author seems to be the Thomas Tovey who published 'Things, as they were, - - - As they are, And as they ought to be. A Poem. With an Earnest Address to the Landowners of the United Kingdoms'. Glocester [sic]: G.F. Harris, 1803. Original drab boards with later paper spine & label. Original endpapers untouched. Armorial bookplate of William Nash Skillicorne (1807-1887), first mayor of Cheltenham, to front pastedown opposite tipped-in slip from the author apologising to subscribers for not as yet supplying the promised View of Montpelier Pump-Room. Skillicorne's great-grandfather Henry was one of the founders of the Spa town. Rectangular twentieth-century college library stamp to foot of title, 5 digit ink number to verso, slight residue of removed label to head of front free endpaper. In all other respects a very good copy.…
